Ear Training

If you want to be a great musician, you can't just be good at guitar or bass. Believe me, there are a lot of people who are very good at guitar or bass. You can be a good musician without any other skills than playing guitar, but you can't be a great musician. Having good musical ears will greatly improve your playing skills, they will make you a better singer, and they will make it easier for you to hear chords, intervals and notes.

Some Ear Training Exercises:
Before you start, let me tell you, this will take a long time for you to master. Once of the most respected skills of a musician is called "perfect pitch" Perfect pitch is the ability to hear a note and know what it is. It takes many years to develop perfect pitch.

But, you have to start somewhere.
Remember in music class when you sang the do, re, mi, fa, sol, etc? Never think you'd ever use it again? Well, first you should take some time to familiarize your self with the syllable system. Since it is based on a 8-note major scale, it would be easiest to make the root note (do) a C. So if you wrote it out, it would look like:

If you have a piano, this is easier, but a guitar will work also. Practice singing the syllables as you play the notes on a guitar or piano. For those of you who play guitar and can't read notes, learn to read notes! But in the meantime:

Practice singing/playing up and down the scale a few times, then try skipping notes and finically try it all over again without playing. just singing.

try these 1st with instrumental accompaniment, then without.

If you can, record yourself doing these, then listen to them to see if you were right. Once you have done those exercises, and a few of your own a few times, you are ready to move on to the next thing.

A Song.
It is good to start out with something simple that you know the tune to. Something good would be a common tune with a simple rhythm. row-row-row your boat (I know, I know) is a good place to start. I have tabbed it out below, but you you've got a piano, the notes are:

Blues And Progressions

This little document is mainly on how to solo using the blues pentatonic scales. A blues pentatonic scale, from what I understand, is simply a minor pentatonic scale with a blues note between the 3rd and 4th tone. Now, the scale is located on five places on the fretbord.
The first one is the simplest I think, as it is the one most popularly known. It goes like this:

Obviously, seeing the tabs, this scale is in E. However, if you want to make it in, say, G, then all you have to do is transpose all the tabs up three frets... get it? Now then, while you can actually use just this little box to solo with (and quite nicely, too), I think that it would highly benefit you to learn the next four boxes, as well.

Now, all these are in E, so in order to make them into a different key, you must simply transpose them accordingly. Also, (and this refers to the previous scale as well), the fingers used really depend on your preference; I personally use my index and ring finger, and occasionally my middle, which leaves my pinky to be used only when holding a chord. So, it's all up to you.

So, there's the boxes. Now, if you just didn't want to play those middle notes, and just use the pentatonic scale, well, that would be alright, but it wouldn't sound as... rich, for lack of a better word, when played with a blues song. It's a little difficult to incorporate that note into a solo, but when you find out where it fits, it adds a nice touch to the song. Oh, and let me throw in a hint for soloing: when I first started, I solo'ed only picking in one direction, which slowed down my tempo. If you alternate picking a string down and up, your speed could more than double. I dunno, that was just meant for beginners.

Now, onto the blues progressions. The 12 bar blues progression is simply made up of the first, fourth, and fifth tones in a major scale, and is spread over twelve measures (bars). For example, in E, the first tone would be E, then - (E, F#, G#, A) - A would be the fourth, and - (E, F#, G#, A, B) - B would be the fifth. Thus, the chords would be E, A, & B. Now, we know the chords... what about the progression? Well, let's say that each letter below is a whole note held in that chord (in 4/4 time, so whole note = 4 beats). In order to play just the plain old 12 bar, you would go:

Go on, play it. Get the hang of it. Now, most blues songs aren't in the major. Most are in seventh. So, try it in seventh now.

B7 is hard to go into, but it sounds nice.

Now, then... you've gotten this far. To make it a little better sounding, let's throw in an extra A7, for extra flavor:

That's what the song, "Sweet Home Chicago" uses in its progression. Now, to finish it off, let's add another B7:

Like it? I do. Now, to make it sound better, use this stroking technique, where the sound isn't like "one-and-two-and" but is instead, "one-a-two-a" so that you sound like you are actually playing blues rhythms (listen to a few blues songs to get what I'm talking about)

Up..and down..up. and down..

I'm sorry, I just can't think of any other way to describe it. I don't have access to note symbols... Well, anyways, on to the next step. Now, you have the chords... let's add a little riff in there to make it sound better. We're still in E7, so here it is.

This next chords are E7 and A7, with an extra note in there to throw in so that it sounds more complex:

Now, use these extra notes with your ring or pinky finger (whichever is easier). Hit them every other beat, and your sound will be a lot better! 1.0 Introduction.
The idea of this FAQ is to give you the information you need to be able to work out and understand which notes make up a certain chord. Using this FAQ you will be able to: Work out the notes you need for *any* chord. Work out what chord name should be given to a particular bunch of notes.

A lot of people are put off from delving into a little chord theory because there seems so much to learn, it often seems confusing, and it's hard to give hard and fast rules. When someone posts a chord shape and asks 'What is the name of this chord' there are usually at least four different replies given. It is true that in a lot of cases there is more than one way to look at things, and often a chord could be given two names, but it's still surprisingly easy to get to grips with the basics of chord names.

What do you need to know to be able to work out chord names for yourself? Well it is hard to give 'Golden Rules' of harmony or music theory which can be followed to the letter always giving the right answer. However there are a small number of basic guidelines which you can follow that should take 95% of the mystery away from music theory as applied to chords.

First things first. To work out chord names the first and most important skill is to be able to count. Hopefully everybody mastered this skill some years ago, so we're off to a good start. The second most important skill is to know the major scale. Most people will be pretty familiar with this too, but in any case it is very easy to learn. The scale is characterised by the distances between successive notes. If we choose G as our starting point, it goes like this:

The pattern of tones and semitones is what characterises the scale. Obviously you can choose whatever note you like to start on, but if you simply count up in semitones, using the middle column above, you will get the major scale of that note.

It makes things easier if we refer to the notes of the scale as 'the 7th' or 'the 3rd'. If we know we are talking about a major scale and we know what the starting note is, then we can work out what the '7th' or '3rd' of that scale is. We use this idea to "spell out" chords - this is where you say something like: The major chord is made up of 1st 3rd 5th This means choose your starting note (the 1st) find the 3rd and 5th of it's major scale and you have the right notes for the chord. The advantage of this method is that it can be used to find *any* major chord - you just change the starting note. If you want to put in a little effort, you can quite easily learn the major scales of every key. That way you don't have to actually count up in semitones every time you want to find the 5th of a certain key. (See Appendix C) but - if you want to keep things really simple, counting will work just as well. So, a little example.

You want to find out what notes are in a D major chord.

Your starting note or root note is D (the 1st)

To get the 3rd of the major scale count up 4 semitones - F#

To get the 5th count up 7 semitones - A

So the notes are : D F# and A

So all this chord stuff comes down to these 3rds, 5ths and so on.
These are called intervals.

2.0 Intervals.
This is a way of referring to notes by desribing the 'distances' between them.

In the G major scale above, we can see that the distance between the 1st note (or root note) and the 2nd note is 2 semitones - this is called a 2nd. The distance between the root note (G) and the 3rd note in the scale is 4 semitones - this is called a 3rd. Pretty easy so far. All you need to do is count up from the root note using notes of the scale, and if you end up on the 5th note of the scale you have a 5th, if you're on the 7th note, you've got a 7th. Surely it can't be that simple.

2.1 Interval Flavours.
Well not quite. As well as major scales, there are minor scales. You could also have a 'weird' note or chromatic note that didn't fit into either scale. To cope with this, the intervals come in different flavours. You can have a minor 3rd or a major 3rd. You can have a normal 5th (perfect 5th) or an augmented 5th. You can have a 9th or a flat 9th. All that changes here is that the 'distance' or interval is either stretched or squeezed by one semitone (half step). So a minor 3rd is a semitone less than a major 3rd. An augmented 5th is a semitone more than a perfect 5th. You will see a few different terms her which mean the same thing.

* An augmented or sharp interval means one semitone higher.

* A diminished or flat interval means one semitone lower.

You also have minor and major intervals which differ by a semitone - the minor interval is one semitone lower than the major interval. Here is a table of intervals with their corresponding 'distances' in semitones.

So to work out any particular note, say the major 6th of an A major scale, start with A, find the distance for a major 6th (9 semitones) and just count up from A.

You should end up with F#, so this is a major 6th up from A. (see chromatic scale - Appendix A). So, to recap. Chords are described or 'spelled out' using intervals. These intervals tell you far above the root note the other notes of the chord are. By using the table above you can find out how many semitones you need to move up for any given interval. Here is a simple example.

Bm7 - the spelling for this is : 1st,  minor 3rd,  5th, minor 7th

Start with B - count up 3 semitones for a minor 3rd - you get D.

Count up 7 semitones from B to get the 5th - F#

Count up 10 semitones to get the minor 7th - A

So the notes are : B D F# A

So - if you know the spelling of a particular chord (I. e the intervals which describe it) then it's simple to use the table above to find out what notes you need. What if you don't know the chord spelling? If you just have a chord name, like F#m9, then you need to know how this chord is built. The basic building blocks of *all* chords are triads.

3.0 Triads.
These are the basic building blocks of chords. A triad is a group of 3 notes and determines the basic sound of a chord. E.g. if the chord is a minor chord, it will be based on a minor triad. If the chord is major, it will be based on a major triad.

3.1 - Major And Minor Triads.
The major and minor triads are made up form these notes:

    1st 3rd 5th

but remember - use a minor 3rd for the minor triad, and the major 3rd for the major triad. A list of all major and minor triads is given at the end of this FAQ (Appendix B). If you want to learn them, it makes life easier, but it's easy enough to just count up in semitones from the root note to get the notes for any triad you're interested in.

The only difference between a major *chord* and a major *triad* is that a chord will usually have more than 3 notes, so you just double up on some of them. The root (1st) is most likely to be doubled, but you can double up on the 1st, 3rd or 5th, although you will get subtly different sounds. Take C major for example.

C major triad  =  1st, major 3rd, 5th  =  C E G

Everybody knows this chord :

If we look at the notes, we see it has :

Which is the same as : 1st 3rd 5th 1st 3rd

So here the 1st and 3rd have been doubled. Remember that the root note must always be the lowest note of the chord. If you want to have the 3rd or 5th at the bottom of the chord, you have to write it as C/E or C/G meaning a C chord with an E (or G) bass. See section 7.0 for more details on X/Y type chords.

3.2 - Suspended Triads.
The thing to remember here is that the 3rd has been replaced with another note - either the 2nd or the 4th. So whereas with major and minor triads you have the 3rd to give the 'flavour' of the chord (i.e. major or minor), with suspended triads you have no 3rd, so the chord is neither major nor minor.

A suspended 4th triad would be :  1st 4th 5th

A suspended 2nd triad would be :  1st 2nd 5th

As with major and minor chords, you just double up on notes to go from the triad to the chord. But you almost never double the 'suspended' note - you usually only double the 1st or 5th. So take Asus4 as our example.

Asus4 triad is :  1st 4th 5th =  A D E

The shape is :

The spelling for this is :

So here the 1st and 5th appear twice in the chord, with just one 4th. So now I've covered major and minor chords, suspended 2nd and suspended 4th chords.

4.0 7th Chords.
4.1 - Minor 7ths.
For minor chords there is one common type of 7th - the minor 7th. As you might expect, you start with the minor triad, then add the minor 7th. So, as an example lets take D minor 7th (Dm7). The spelling is : 1st, minor 3rd, 5th, minor 7th. Using the table of intervals above, we count up from D to get the other notes.

To get the min 3rd, count up 3 semitones - F
To get the 5th count up 7 semitones      - A
To get the min 7th count up 10 semitones - C

So Dm7 is made up of the notes : D F A C

If you use the open D string for th D note, you could use these two shapes:

Min/maj 7th Chords.
There is another chord called the min/maj7th. This is a bit of a weird fish, but you might come across it once in a while. It's made up by taking the minor triad and adding the major 7th to it. So Dm/maj7th would be: D F A C#.

4.2 - Major 7ths and flat 7ths (dominant 7ths).
With major triads you can build 2 types of 7th chord. If you add the major 7th of the scale, you get the major 7th chord. If you add the *flat* 7th to the major triad you get the so-called dominant 7th chord. When guitarists talk about '7th chords' as in 12-bar blues etc, then they mean chords with the *flat* 7th. Major 7th chords are written as Cmaj7, Dmaj7 etc but the flat 7 or 'blues' 7th is written simply as C7, D7 etc. So for a major 7th chord the spelling is: 1st major 3rd 5th major 7th. If we start with F as our root, and count up we get this :

Go up 4 semitones from F for major 3rd : A
Go up 7 semitones from F for 5th       : C
Go up 11 semitones from F for maj 7th  : E

So the notes of the chord Fmaj7 are: F A C E. To build an F7 chord, the only difference is that we add a flat 7 instead of a maj7. So we add an Eb instead of E, so the notes of a F7 chord are : F A C Eb. As with simple triads, you can double up on some of the notes to make a chord. With 7th chords you could double up on the root, 3rd, 7th or 5th. Take a standard 7th chord, E7:

The notes are: E B D G# B E, so the root and 5th have both been doubled.

5.0 6th Chords.
To make a 6th chord, start with the triad and add the 6th. But note that the *major 6th* is added to make both major and minor 6th chords - the 'minor' or 'major' bit comes from
the triads. So for a C6 chord, start with a C major triad (CEG) and add the major 6th (A).

C6 = C E G A

For a Cm6, start with a C minor triad (CEbG) and add the major 6th (A).

Cm6 = C Eb G A

6/9 Chords.
These are similar to 6th chords, but they have a 9th added, as you may have guessed! I've always seen this as major chords, but I guess there's no reason why you couldn't have something like Dm6/9. Anyway they are built up by taking the basic triad, and adding the 6th and the 9th. So C6/9 would be: 1st, maj 3rd, 5th, 6th, 9th. I.e. the notes are: C E G A D. (The 5th can sometimes be left out). A nice shape for this C6/9 would be:

6.0 9th, 11th and 13th Chords.
Once you move beyond 7ths and start adding notes from higher up the scale (e.g. 9ths, 11ths, 13ths) there is one very important thing to remember. All of these chords must have a 7th in them. Just as there are 3 types of 7th chord (7th, min 7th, maj 7th) you end up with 3 types for 9th 11th and 13th chords by simply adding to the basic 7th chord.

To get a 9th chord, add the 9th to the (flat) 7th chord
To get a min 9th, add the 9th to the min 7th chord
To get a maj 9th, add the 9th to the maj 7th chord

To get 11th chords you can add the 11th to the 3 types of 9th chord, but most ot the time the 9th is not needed, so you simply add an 11th to the 7th chords to build the 3 types of 11th chord, and similarly with 13ths. If you have a voicing of a 13th chord that *also* has a 9th or 11th in it, then that's fine : it's still a 13th chord, but most of the time these chords are just a normal 7th with an added note (9th, 11th
or 13th).

6.1 - 9th 11th and 13th Chords.
The spelling for chords like C9, C11, C13 (i.e chords built on C7 - so they have a flat 7th in them) is:

 9th  :  1st, maj 3rd, 5th, flat 7th, 9th

 11th  :  1st, maj 3rd, 5th, flat 7th, 11th

 13th  :  1st, maj 3rd, 5th, flat 7th, 13th

It's worth noting here that the 5th can be omitted from the chord. The essential notes for C9, C11 and C13 are the 1st, 3rd, 7th and 9th/11th/13th.

6.2 - Minor 9ths, 11ths, 13ths.
The same principle applies for the minor versions of these chords. Start with the minor 7th chord, and add the 9th or 11th or 13th. So the spellings are:

For a minor ninth chord    :  1st,  min 3rd,  5th,  flat 7th,  9th

For a minor 11th chord    :  1st,  min 3rd,  5th,  flat 7th,  11th

For a minor 13th chord     :  1st,  min 3rd,  5th,  flat 7th,  13th

As before, the 5th can be left out, but all other notes must be in the chord. You could also include the 9th in an 11th chord, or the 9th and 11th in a 13th chord, but on a guitar this is usually not done.

6.3 - Major 9ths, 11ths, 13ths.
Again, a very similar principle. Start with the major 7th chord and add the 9th, 11th or 13th. It's very important to be clear on the difference between a 7th, a min 7th and a maj 7th to be able to build these chords correctly! The spellings are:

 maj 9th  :  1st, maj 3rd, 5th, maj 7th, 9th

 maj 11th  :  1st, maj 3rd, 5th, maj 7th, 11th

 maj 13th  :  1st, maj 3rd, 5th, maj 7th, 13th

(Again the 5th is the only optional note). A quick example:

To find the notes for A13 , we have A as the root.

Move up 4 semitones for the maj 3rd      :  C#  
Move up 7 semitones for the 5th          :  E
Move up 10 semitones for the flat 7th    :  G
Move up 21 semitones for the 13th        :  F#


So A13 = A C# E G F#

Note that when counting up large intervals, like 13ths, you can count up 9 semitones (21-12) to get the right note name since subtracting 12 just means an octave lower. But when forming the chord, the 13th must be at the right 'distance' from the root - i.e. it must be more than an octave higher than the root, otherwise it is just an ordinary 6th.

7.0 X/Y type Chords.
This seems to be a commonly misunderstood term. If a chord is written as something like C/G then it simply means that you play the chord given by the first letter, with the bass note given by the second letter - in this example, we have C major with a G bass note. Chords like these may have a bass note which is already part of the chord itself, as in this example (C major is made up of the notes C E G , so the G bass is part of the chord) or they may have a bass note which is 'outside' the chord, something like E/A (A is not part of the E major chord). Working out what notes are in these type of chords presents no extra problems - simply work out the notes in the chord given by the first letter, then add the bass note. These X/Y type of chords can get more complicated than straight major/minor chords with things like Asus2/C#, but the principle is the same. To work out this chord, start with Asus2.

spelling = 1st 2nd 5th

Look up the intervals in the table of intervals to get the number of semitones you have to count up for each note.

 2nd = 2 semitones up from A = B
 5th = 7 semitones up from A = E

so Asus2 = A B E

therefore Asus2/C# = C# A B E

(it's standard practice to 'spell' chords from low to high)

8.0 'Add' chords and chromatic chords.
Just to recap, here are the triads and chords I've covered so far:

Major, minor, sus2 and sus4 triads and chords
Major 7th, flat 7th and minor 7th chords
9th, min 9th, maj 9th, 11th, min 11th, maj 11th, 
13th, min 13th, maj 13th chords

All other chords fall into the series of chords with 'added' notes or chords with altered notes.

Added chords.
Chords with 'added' notes are just what they sound like. They are usually written as something like Cadd2, Cadd4 etc. Simply start with the 'base' chord (C in this example) and add the appropriate note. You can of course add to any 'base' chord whether it's major or minor or whatever. Be sure you understand the difference between add2 and sus2 chords, and add4 and sus4 chords - the sus chords have the 3rd *replaced* with another note. The 'add' chords simply add to the triad, so Cadd2 would be:

 Cadd2 = C triad + 2nd = 1st, 2nd, maj 3rd, 5th

 Csus2 = Csus2 triad   = 1st, 2nd, 5th

Similarly there is an important difference between 'add9' and '9' chords. A C9 chord *must* have the flat 7th in it (see above), but the Cadd9 chord will not - it's just a C major triad with a 9th added. You can carry on adding as many notes as you want. If you play around with alternative tunings you could quite easily come across chords like Aadd2add4, but most of the time you'll just have one added note. You can of course add a note to a chord that isn't a simple major or minor chord - you can have things like Csus4add9 etc.

Altered chords.
These are chords with chromatic alterations. The 5th, 2nd, 4th, 9th etc can all be chromatically altered - i.e moved up or down by a semitone (halfstep). Examples of this are chords like E7#9 and E7b9 - the 9th of a normal E9 chord has been sharpened in the E7#9, and flattened in the E7b9. So what are the notes for these? Well, starting with the 'E7' bit:

  E7  =  1st, maj 3rd, 5th, flat 7th  =  E, G#, B, D

Now add the #9 (count up 15 semitones from E) - G

So E7#9 = E G# B D G


Similarly E7b9 = E G# B D Gb

There are a few different ways to write these chords.
'-' and '+' signs are sometimes used to mean 'flat' and 'sharp' respectively, but 'b' and '#' are used as well. You might even see 'dim' and 'aug' (diminished and augmented) used too for the same thing. So E7#9 could be written as E7+9 or E7aug9 and E7b9 could be written as E7-9 or E7dim9. With these chromatically altered chords there is almost no limit on the number of chords you can create - most of these will be used in jazz, but some (like the E7#9) appear quite a lot in rock music too. Too work out the notes to these types of chord it's best to start with the 'basic' chord, then add the chromatic notes to this. So, as above for E7#9, start with E7, then add the #9. You may find several chromatic notes in one chord like A13b5b9 - treat it just the same way - build up the A13 chord, then swap the 5th and 9th for the flat 5th and flat 9th.

9.0 Diminished And Augmented Chords.
The only chords left to cover are the diminished and augmented. A diminished chord is made up of these notes:

  1st, min 3rd, flat 5th, double flat 7th

(double flat 7th is the same note as the major 6th, but it's usually written as double flat 7th - don't ask me why). So A diminished would be: A, C, Eb, Gb. As a point of interest, the intervals between successive notes in a diminished chord are ALL minor thirds. This means if you start to build a dim chord on a C, you end up with the same notes as for the A dim. In other words Adim = Cdim = Ebdim = Gbdim = A+C+Eb+Gb. So when you play a diminished chord, if you move it up the neck by 3 frets you still have the same chord.

An augmented chord is made up of these notes:

  1st, maj 3rd, sharp 5th

So A augmented would be : A C# F. (Intervals between successive notes are all maj 3rds - i.e 4 semitones)

Appendix C
Circle of 5ths and Key Signatures.
You've probably heard the phrase 'circle of 5ths' before. It relates to the way key signatures are written, which tells us how many sharps or flats to play. C major has no sharps or flats G major has one sharp (F#) D major has 2 sharps (F# and C#) if we carry on finding the keys with 3, 4, 5 sharps we find that the next key in the series is a 5th higher than the previous one. So when we start with C major, go up a 5th to G major, then up a 5th to D, then A and so on. It also works for the flat key signatures if we go down in 5ths. So a 5th down from C is F (one flat), then another 5th down is Bb (2 flats), then Eb and so on. Here is my attempt at drawing it as the famous 'circle' of 5ths (more like an ellipse in my case) Everytime you move round one positition, you go up or down by a 5th. The + signs are for the sharps, the - for the flats. Note that this is for the major keys only.

The only other thing you need to know here is which are the flat and sharp notes. Here again there is another 5ths relationship. If we list the sharp notes we need to add as we move clockwise round from C major we get: F#, C#, G#, D#, A#, E#, B# so starting from the F#, the series goes up a 5th every time. So how does it all work? For G major, from the circle we see it has 1 sharp. Take the 1st sharp from the series above: F#. So we need F# for a G major scale/key signature For D major, we need 2 sharps, so we take F# and C# For A major, we take F#, C# and G# and so on for all the other sharp keys. For the flat notes, the series is:

 Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Cb, Fb

(yet another 5ths relationship)

So if we pick a flat key, say Eb major, from the circle we see it has 3 flats, so we need Bb, Eb and Ab. Because all the things you need to know here are connected with relationships of a 5th, it's fairly easy to learn the circle of 5ths. This makes it very easy to work out notes of a scale. Note that this is all for the *major* scale. For minor scales you need to find the realtive major key. The relative major key is always 3 semitones higher than the minor key (e. g Cmajor / Aminor - C is 3 semitones above A). So, say you want to know the scale of Ab minor. The relative major key is Cb major. So you need all 7 flats! The scale is: Ab, Bb, Cb, Db, Eb, Fb, Gb, Ab. When you see things like Fb, it sounds a bit strange, but it makes things a lot easier if you stick to these conventions instead of saying 'E is the same as Fb'. The idea is that for every scale, the letter names appear once only. So every scale will have an F of some sort, but in some it will be F natural, some it will be F# and some it will be Fb.

I. The Fret Board
The first that you will need to learn is the notes on the fretboard. It is very important to any theory on guitar to know where the notes are on the neck. At first, memorize the notes on the first couple of strings. Then figure out what the notes on the rest of the strings will be. In a pretty short amount of time you should be able to do that. In time you'll develop more of a feel for where the notes fall, without having to think about it, but that's not necessary for chord theory. What you really need to be able to do is to be able to figure out what notes you're playing in a given chord.

Notice that there is a full step between all notes except for B and C, and E and F. For the sake of simplicity I have only shown sharps, but it is important to understand where. the flats are. A# (# = sharp) is equal to Bb (b = flat). D# is equal to Eb. B# is equal to C, and Cb is equal to B. Once again, for the purpose of chord theory, it is not necessary to be instantly familiar with every note on the fretboard. What is necessary is to be able to figure out the notes of any given chord that you are playing.

II. Keys (the Circle of fifths)
The next step in understanding any guitar theory is to understand the circle of fifths. Its importance is that it diagrams several important concepts. First, it is used in determining scales. Second, it is used to determine which chords are in any given key. Third, it is the basis for chord substitutions. To begin with, I'll demonstrate how the circle of fifths is used in a blues progression in G (something that hopefully everyone is familiar with). Twelve bar blues in G begins with 4 bars of G, 2 bars of C, 2 bars of G, one bar of D7, one bar of C, one bar of G, and finally one bar of D7 (as shown below). This progression is also commonly known as

a I - IV - V progression. If you are not familiar with this progression, learn it. It is one of the most basic building blocks in rock music. Traces of it can be found in everything from Led Zeppelin to Doo-Wop to surf music to Eric Clapton. The next diagram shows the chords that are in the key of G.

As you can see, the G is the I, the C is the IV, and the D7 is the V in the I- IV - V progression. Any F chords played in the key of G need to be sharped, otherwise they are considered to be out of key. In the same way, the circle of fifths shows which notes need to sharped or flatted in chord constuction. To form a major chord, the first, third, and fifth notes of the scale need to be played. In the case of Gmajor (or just G as it is commonly called), a G note would be 1, a B note would be 3, and a D note would be 5.

I will show some substitution rules for incorporating more unusual chords into a progression. It is important to remember that these rules are only general guidelines. If you look at the chords of some songs that you know, you will probably see that as a general trend, these rules are followed, but on many occasions they aren't. One thing to keep in mind: a chord progression may be in the key of A (A is the I chord) without playing an A chord first. Look at the following example.

This the chord progression in Lola, by the Kinks. In this case, it is in the key of A (A = I, D = IV, E = V). This shows that the first chord played in a progression does not determine the key. Another example is the IIm - V - I chord progression, which is one of the most common in western music. As you can see, it starts on the IIm chord. Since I don't have very good graphics capabilities here, I will represent the circle of fifths in chart form, as would be read clockwise from 12 o'clock.

Notice the spacing between chords is the same for each key. Here is the example again in the key of G.

Notice that there is a whole step between all chords except between III and IV, and between VII and I. This will be true for all keys. That pattern is also the same as that for the major scale. The above diagram shows the notes contained in the G major scale. The VI chord is called the relative minor, because it shares many notes with the tonic (I chord). If C were the tonic, Am would be the relative minor. If you play one after the other, you will notice they sound good together. If something is played in an Am key, you use the exact same chords as if it were being played in the key of C. In this way, you can determine all of the mionr keys as well from the circle of fifths.

3. Chord Construction.
A chord is a group of three or more different notes played together. Every chord is based on a specific formula which relates back to the major scale after which it is named. As shown earlier, the formula for a major chord is 1 3 5 hence a G major (GM) chord consists of the first, third, and fifth notes of the G major scale, G B D (refer to the circle of fifths chart). **Note the ROOT note is the note after which the chord is named (the 1 note). The formula for a minor chord is 1 b3 5. In the case of a G minor (Gm) the notes would be G Bb D. **Note: a G flat major (Gb) is Gb Bb Db, therefore a Gbm (G flat minor) would be Gb Bbb Db, or Gb A Db. There are many cases where a flatted note has to be flatted again according to the chord formula. In the following diagrams I will show the names, formulas, and fingerings for over 30 of the most common chords. The numbers show where to fret the strings and with which finger. A 1===1 means to barre that number of strings with your index finger. Any notes with a question mark? underneath are optional (can be muted). Any strings with no note shown below are not to be played. Sharp and flat symbols will come before the note (b3). Shown are the most common barre chord fingerings (all open chords can be derived from the barre chord shapes). Not all chords have the root as the bass note, but most do. 1 = index finger, 2 = ring, 3 = middle, 4 = pinky.

Because of the nature of the formulat for augmented chords, any note played could be considered the root. Therefore, Ab+, C+, and E+ can all have exactly the same shape at the same location on the neck. The same concept applies to diminished chords.

In altered chords, the notes to be altered are always written as part of the chord name, enabling you to construct the chord. For example, Cm7#5b9 (not listed above) is a Cm7 chord with the fifth sharped and the ninth flatted. Another type of alteration occurs when chord symbols are written thus:

   G/F#, or C/G.

Finger the chord to the left of the slash, then change the note on the bass string to the note to the right of the slash. Here are the substitution rules for altered chords:

9, b9, or #9 replaces 1
sus2, sus4, or b3 replaces 3
b5, #5, #11, or 13 replaces 5

I haven't included everything, because you can easily tell which category a chord belongs to. Cmajor13 substitutes for any major (I, IV). G7b5b9 susbstitutes for a dominant 7 chord, etc. There are also a few chords that are not shown in the diagrams, but you should be able to figure those out too. Cmajor 13 is 1 3 5 7 9 and 13, G7sus2 is 1 2 5 b7, etc. It is important to keep in mind that these are guides, not rules, and there will be many times when you'll want to break them, which is fine. If it sounds good, then it is right. The following is a more in depth description of several chords and their common uses.

Major 7 - gives a fuller sound, often used in jazz
Major 9 - used in jazz
Major6add9 - used often in country and in jazz

Suspended chords usually resolve to the major, often used to break
up a static vamp (instead a playing C the whole time, switch from C to Csus to C, etc)

Minor - sad chord
m6 - used in funk
m7 - used in funk
m7#5 - used in fusion
m11 - used in funk
m(M7) - dark, moody
Ninth - used in funk
Augmented - connecting chord
Diminished - passing chord
7sus2 - used in folk

Modes.
The last topic I'm going to cover is modes. The reason I'm including them is that they fit in so well with chord theory (as does the major scale, which I mentioned much earlier). A mode is simply a displaced scale. The ones I will show are a C major scale (no sharps or flats), displaced to D, E, F, etc. The modes are commonly used in jazz improvisation, but they also appear very often in rock music. The one thing to remeber about soloing in the modes is that you need to change modes according to the chord changes, and also you need to resolve to the root when you make these changes. The diagrams below show one position for the modes, with the most up-to-date method of fingering (but certainly not the only). If you are soloing in the F - Lydian mode, and need to change to G -Lydian, you just slide everything up two frets.

Basic Jazz Chords Forms

Welcome to this lesson. Now you may be thinking that this just a dull list of various chords that the author finds useful. True, but this is more than a list. This is a method of learning to navigate the fretboard using chords. This method is based on the CAGED system of finding your way around the fretboard heres how it works.

In the caged system you learn to use 5 basic chord forms, scale forms, and arpeggio forms, however we shall only get into the chordal aspect in this lesson. Nows the part where you learn to read my chord diagrams. Lets use a c major for the example. x32010. The first one in line will be the deep sounding string, well call it the sixth string and the one under it the 5th and so on. The x means that you dont play this string so skip over it. Play the 5th string at the 3rd fret. The 4th string at the 2nd fret, the 0 at the 3rd string stands for open, unfretted. The 2nd string will be fingered at the 1st fret, and the 1st string will be open. Now that you can read my diagrams ill list the basic chords in this system.

You can play any of this chords anywhere on the neck by barring them. Barring simply means that instead of playing the open notes like you played them in the open position, putting your first finger down across the entire fret. Lets say your playing an e bar chord and that your barring the 5th fret. Then you concider the 6th fret the first fret, and the 7th fret the second fret etc. here ill diagram the e bar chord at the 5th fret e major barred at the 5th fret - 577655.

Now well get into the caged aspect. lets say that you want to learn to play the c major chord all over the neck. You would play an open c maj in the open position. An a from bar chord at third fret, a g from bar chord at the 5th fret, an e form bar chord at the 7th fret, and a d from bar chord at the 10th fret. Then it all recycles itself at the 12 fret, c form bar chord, a form bar chord at the 15 fret etc... Keep in mind that these are all c chords. Its the same with any other chord that you want to play. Lets say you want to learn to play a g chord in various places. The pattern stayes the same, the only difference is that your starting with a g. GEDCA, instead of CAGED. This applies to all of them.

Remember that you play the chords at in the open position, then at the 3rd fret, at the 5th fret, 7th fret, and 10th fret. Remember that if you would choose to go any farther the pattern would recycle itself at the 12th fret. Now its time the learn some interval theory. The distance one fret next to another, lets say 5th from 6th, is called a half step. The distance between 2 frets, lets say 5th and 7th, is called a whole step. Half steps are called #, or flatted notes. The 5th fret on the 6th string is an a note. The 7th fret is a b note. Inbetween them at the 6th note their is something called an accidental. accidentals have 2 names. The sixth string sixth fret can either be called an a#, an a sharp, or a Bb, b flat. This rule has 2 exceptions, between the e and f notes, and b and c notes. The distance between this two notes is a half step, becouse the major scale is built of w w h w w w h. so here is the c major scale. c d e f g a b c. Thats why their is no accidental between the b and c, and e and f.

Lets say that you want to play an a sharp/b flat. You play an an a chord, doesnt matter which form you use, and move it up one fret. If you play an open a you have to bar ofcourse. This is also how you can play a b chord, and an f chord. Find an a chord, and move it up 2 frets for a b, and move an e chord up one fret for an f. OK, so now ill diagram the chords. I suggest that you practice moving the bar chords up and down the neck, and switching bar chords. I recommend that you learn the chords in the fallowing order, as in to soak it all in. It would be good to understand how to read a formula. Here is the c major scale. cdefgabc. The c is the 1, the d is the 2, the e is the 3 and so on.

Composing Original Riff

Hello everybody. I didn't know what to write about, so I decided, "What the hell, I'll teach the masses about some tips that may help with their songwriting." However, as stated by the name, this isn't for lyric writing, but rather, for original riff writing. What is a riff? Well, simply put, it is either an arpeggio, chord or some other type of progression that is not a "lick." A lick is usually a two to three second lead piece, connected with other licks. Now that I've filled your brain with some guitar lingo, lets begin. The following are some ways to go about writing riffs.

1. Write through inspiration.
What the heck do I mean by this? I mean listen to a song you really like (or maybe just one that everybody else likes) and then grab your thunder - axe (the term I like to use meaning "guitar") and start playing something. Try not to look at the tab for the song though. Now, I want you to just play something, at either the same tempo and timing, start at the same starting note as the song (or something similar), play with the same feel or whatever you want. Just think of something from the song that you really like, and just sort of fool around until you get somewhere. My favorite approach with this method is starting in the same general area of the fretboard as a riff you really like. And yes, doing it this way means you will probably have to look at a tab, but you don't want to copy the song, so just simply glance at the tab, and then begin. Good riffs are something you have to fool around with to get good at. I'll give you some examples of riffs I have made that complement this approach (songs used for inspiration will be named first, then the artist, and then the description):

- Sweet Child O' Mine (Guns N' Roses) - one of my first and in many people's opinions, my best one, came from me starting at the twelfth fret area, and making an arpeggio riff with some distortion. Sounds sort of space-ish. This song was made when I was learning arpeggios.

- Black Dog (Led Zeppelin) - again, another riff where I started in the same area (technically known as "The Key" of a song), and created sort of a blues-ish, jazz-like riff, but still sounds very different from the original song. Not as fast paced as Black Dog, but a great riff none the less.

- Hotel California (The Eagles) - this riff was made from the "feel" of Hotel California, rather than using the same key, which in this song's case uses a capo at the fifth fret (the key of A). Great rock riff, that sounds as though people could dance to it.

Needless to say, this is quite a good approach to use. However, it works better when you are first starting out, or not so good, because:
1) It gives you something to practice to help "you" get better and;
2) You will learn techniques as you learn how to play, and you will practice them, and practice songs with them in it.
Thus you will make a song similar (maybe). Plus, you may not be able to play the song inspiring you anyway, so there will be no need to worry about copying, now will there? You don't have to be a begginer, but I find it easier to use this approach when you are.

2. The "Holes" Method.
I call this method the "Holes" method because it's like this. You make an original riff, or a riff of some kind, try to add to it, but it doesn't go with it, (thus you fall into a hole) but you still think it has potential (you come out of another hole). I have done this many times, although I don't plan to use any of the riffs I can remember. However, this method is powerful, because you are trying to make riffs for one song, and many of your failed attempts become riffs for other songs. One riff I tried to use to complete the "Black Dog" inspired song mentioned above, kind of went with it, but didn't. So now, if I want, I have another riff in my repretoire of original ones. So remember; you may want to keep those riffs that you thought were garbage, and make something of them. One major advantage to this method, is if you want to make an album with similar, but different sounding songs, that you want to define your "unchanging sound." Anyway, thats an idea.

3. "Open" up.
Use open notes in your songs, even when you are at the 15th fret, you may come up with something that can blow people out of the water, just by adding an open note or two. I have a couple good riffs that use open notes in them, and they sound great. Good for making more "evil" sounding songs. Eddie Van Halen uses lots of open notes in his soloing, so why not use them in your riffs?

4. Find your groove and favorite stuff.
Okay, now I'm sure that many people, like me, have a "favorite chord" that they just love. Whether it be the E minor, or the F diminished, you can find chords that you just love so much, and think, "Damn thats good. Lets make some tunes out of it." And thus, a dynasty will begin. Or at least, a whole new outlook on making your riffs. Take me for instance. I just love the a minor chord (preferabally the open one) because it sounds great, has many other places to go that are easily accessible (Asus, AMaj, A7, Am7 etc) and just overall appeals to my ear. I also like suspended chords in general, as they have that great tone that I find just right. Anyway, you can make great riffs, using just one chord letter. I made a very memorable riff, starting with our friend the A minor, and adding sevenths or what not. Not too many songs use a one chord type of riff, so it may be a good thing to check out.

5. Use unorthodox means.
Great riffs are just waiting to be unlocked. however, you may have to do some sneaky things to find them. You can try stretches that you can barely make, and make some good arpeggios out of them, or you can make some odd chords that you don't think exist (which, they do) or play with techniques or styles that you would never use. Experiment.

6. Let your fingers do the walking.
One of the best methods, is improvisinng. You don't even have to be good at improv, you just have to be playing. I have many great riffs made when I was talking to my friends, or watching tv. Just get relax, don't think about it and play. Just play. I can almost guarantee that one day, when you aren't thinking about what you are doing, you will come up with something that sparks your attention.

7. Unleash your emotion.
The most obvious method is to play what you feel. If you are feeling sad, play the guitar, and you will most likely come up with a sad riff. A great one to use (especially if your girlfriend/boyfriend breaks up with you; or better yet dumps you. Not trying to be a jerk, but it's the truth.

8. Conclusion.
To conclude, I just want to say that, these are just ideas that you may never have thought or overlooked. If you already knew about these, then all the power to you. I hope I have sparked your interest and influenced your composition skills at least a little bit. One thing I didn't mention is to try moving open chords to higher frets. You an make numerous original riffs like this. Anyway, don't give up; you'll find at least one good riff.
